U S Census - LGBT Austin Town Hall
Your participation in the 2010 Census is critically important!
That's why Equality Texas, Metropolitan Community Church Austin, and the U.S. Census are hosting a second Austin LGBT Town Hall!
Come learn about important changes made by the U.S. Census Bureau that will affect how lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are counted.
The Census Bureau recently announced a policy change. When gay and lesbian couples indicate they are married on the 2010 form, the Census will count them as married. This makes the Census the first Federal agency to recognize marriage of gay and lesbian couples.
While the Census does not ask anyone for their sexual orientation, it is important to note that knowing which "boxes" to check on the Census form will directly affect the counting of LGBT households.

The conference will include a full day of panel discussions, plus two plenary sessions for all attendees. Each panel focuses on a policy issue in Texas and integrates a variety of voices on each issue. The panels comprehensively address and educate on the impact of public policy on Texans and present approaches to public policy that render positive results.
Panel topics are scheduled to include:
-
Best Interest of the Child: Parenting Policies; -
Equality & Justice in Diverse Communities; -
Friends with Benefits: The Ally Agenda; -
Reading, Writing, and Bullying? Safe Schools Policies; -
Full Faith and Credit: Relationship Recognition; -
Gender Identity and Public Policy; -
On the Job Equality: Workplace Policies; -
Crimes of Bias: Hate Crimes Policy; and -
Pride in Faith. -
Additionally, there will be two plenary sessions - the Political Landscape, and Our Town: Municipal Equality.
The State of the State Public Policy Conference will directly impact attendees' ability to educate others on public policy as it relates to sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, and the effect of policy on the lives of Texans.
The conference is a natural precursor of the 2011 Legislative Session, offering perspective, education and opportunities across the state for successful policy work. After the conference, the Foundation's affiliate organization, Equality Texas, will utilize the information gained to focus on policy-shaping for the 2011 session.
Attendance is free! Advance registration is required. Register for the State of the State Policy Conference here.
Interested in mingling with conference attendees and speakers, Equality Texas board members, and key elected officials? Join the Equality Texas Foundation and host Anita Tschurr for a Pre-Conference Reception on April 16th. You can find out more information here.

Equality Texas Equality Project Training

Hosted by Equality Texas Foundation Supported by St. Mary's OUTLaw
Saturday, March 27th, 2010
Equality Texas Foundation is conducting a San Antonio Equality Project Training on Saturday, March 27th, 2010 at 10:00am at the Northeast Service Center Facility.
The Equality Project is a public education program on policy issues and their effect on Texas citizens. The Project also trains participants to establish relationships with their state representatives and senators, and to advocate for policy changes with their elected officials.
The Equality Project aims to engage the public in maintaining continuous conversations with their elected officials about matters of public policy that are directly impacting constituents’ lives. It is these conversations about real people’s lives that will ultimately motivate policy change to eliminate discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.
LEARN more about LGBT family issues, workplace nondiscrimination, hate crimes, bullying and harassment, public accommodations, and other pertinent issues.
LEARN how easy it is to have a one-on-one conversation with your elected officials and their staff. Discover how empowering it is to realize that, as a constituent, you have the right to be heard!
Attendance is free (lunch included), however advance registration is required. Register online now, or call 512.474.5475 for more information.
