What Is the Equality Project?

The Equality Project is our most ambitious grassroots effort to date. It is comprised of two parts which work together to make the presence of the LGBT community known to our representatives both during and out of Session. The Equality Project is this concerted lobbying effort. Most legislators in Texas have both a capitol office and a district office. They should receive visits at both offices. The first portion of the Project is individual lobbying at the district office. While most of the legislative work occurs at the capitol office, the district office serves as the connection between legislators and their constituents and provides a way for legislators to stay in touch with the people they serve. The second portion of the Equality Project is Lobby Day in Austin on March 5th, 2007. Participating in either or both of these lobbying actions is crucial to making our voices heard. Our legislators need to know that they have gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and allied constituents, and that their job as elected officials is to serve the entire community, including LGBT Texans.

Project Goal: The goal of the Equality Project is for every Texas Representative and Senator to receive at least one visit by an LGBT or Ally Texan in his or her district office before the end of the 80th Legislative Session and to hear from us as a community on District Lobby Day.

Project Timeline: The 80th Legislative Session begins January 9, 2007 and closes on May 28, 2007. Any time between now and the end of the Session is an excellent time to make district visits. Even if the legislator is not available in his or her district office you can meet with the Chief of staff or another staff member, so you can still make district visits during Session. Lobby Day will be held on March 5th, 2007.
