In a 5 to 4 decision today, the U.S. Supreme Court lifted a temporary stay of the Trump administration’s policy of barring most transgender people from serving in the military. The order permits the administration to stop transgender people from enlisting while the cases challenging the ban move forward in the lower courts. Transgender service members who are already serving will not be affected by today’s action.

The following can be attributed to Lou Weaver, Transgender Programs Coordinator, Equality Texas:

Equality Texas stands with the brave service members leading the fight in court against the Trump administration’s transgender military ban. Transgender Texans have served in the military with honor and bravery for decades. There is no evidence to support a policy that bars patriotic Americans who are medically fit and able to deploy from military service. Transgender recruits and service members just want to be evaluated by the same standards as anyone else.
