Texas House and Senate Members were scored based on their records on working either for or against LGBTQ+ equality this session. As coordinated attacks on the LGBTQ+ communities sweep through the nation, it’s more important than ever to hold legislators accountable for their efforts against the community and to celebrate those champions that are holding the line and showing that a better way is possible for Texas.
Legislators’ scores are based on how well they served the LGBTQIA+ community in Texas in 4 different categories: (1) Authorship and Sponsorship of legislation, (2) Floor Votes, (3) Leadership, and (4) Public Statements. Through this matrix we’ve given each lawmaker a letter grade describing their performance. In addition to this year’s scores, for incumbents we’ve included a three session progress report that illustrates how each lawmaker’s support for the LGBTQIA+ community has shifted over time.
While our work focuses on issues that directly impact the LGBTQ+ community per se, each of us holds a variety of identities that cannot be reduced to one letter in the alphabet. Other groups conduct similar analyses of public officials’ performance according to a variety of standards. Here are a few other scorecards that may be of interest to members of our community:
