Webinar: SCOTUS Title VII Case Update
Posted on April 10, 2020 at 8:08 pm

Equality Texas Family,

We hope you’re doing well, and we’re keeping you and your families in our thoughts.

In the next few months, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) will announce a decision on a set of landmark cases for LGBTQ Americans. The court heard oral arguments last October, and like many of us, the Court is working from home, meaning that a decision could come down any day.

With this decision, the Court has a chance to affirm employment nondiscrimination protections for the LGBTQ community under Title VII of current civil rights law. For those of us living in Texas without any statewide nondiscrimination protections, this decision is especially crucial. If the Court rules against us, it will roll back some of the few existing protections for LGBTQ folks at the federal level.

Regardless of how the court rules, we must ask legislators to pass statewide and federal nondiscrimination protections that ensure that no one should have to worry about being fired from a job, evicted from an apartment, or turned away at the corner store because of who you are or whom you love.

Here at Equality Texas, we’re prepping for this decision and invite you to join us for this historic moment for our community.

  1. Get educated on the case. Watch our recorded webinar “SCOTUS Overview: The Supreme Court Title VII Cases Explained”, a virtual panel discussion with three legal experts. Learn the history of the cases, the potential impact of a decision, and audience Q&A.
  1. Advocate. Send a virtual postcard to your legislator calling for statewide and federal nondiscrimination protections.
  1. Inform others. Use one of our two templates or create your own rally sign to share the need for nondiscrimination protections and share a picture of you holding it on social media. Make sure to tag us so we can add you to our site!
  1. Join our virtual community gathering when a decision comes down. A decision could drop from now through the summer, so be sure to keep a look out for a decision day email alert. Once the decision comes out, we will post information about our virtual community gathering.

In this moment of national crisis, we hope to see a decision from that Court that brings our community, and our nation, closer together. But no matter how the court decides, a statewide and federal nondiscrimination law will ensure we’re protected no matter what. Equality Texas will keep working towards the full and lived equality of every LGBTQ Texan, and we can’t do it without you.
