For Immediate Release: Equality Texas Condemns Discriminatory SB6; Efforts Should Focus on Actual Sexual Assaults
Posted on April 12, 2017 at 2:00 pm

SB6 is discrimination. Discrimination is not the solution to sexual assault; neither is it effective for victim advocacy. Addressing sexual assault is the solution to sexual assault. If anything, passing SB6 will put transgender people at even greater risk of violence than they already are. More than 250 rape crisis centers, shelters, and other service providers throughout the United States, who work every day to reduce sexual assault throughout communities have repeatedly spoken up against flawed understandings of public safety issues. Advocating in favor of SB6 will only harm transgender people, and will do nothing to reduce violence or assault. Any legislation that seriously wants to address public safety should not discriminate against transgender Texans, and should focus on actual perpetrators of assault.
