Watch: Transgender 8-Year-Old Marilyn Morrison Joins Dallas Pride Parade
Posted on September 20, 2016 at 5:09 pm

The media reported this weekend that up to 45,000 people turned out for Dallas’ annual Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade in Oak Lawn. One of this year’s proud participants was Marilyn Morrison, an 8-year old transgender girl. She joined her family and Equality Texas during the parade to educate people about growing up transgender in Texas.

“I want people to understand that I’m just a normal kid,” said Marilyn.

While Marilyn was proudly marching with Equality Texas in the Texas Freedom Parade, other members of the Equality Texas team were in Houston hosting our first Transgender Leadership Institute concurrent with the Gender Infinity Conference. To grow and expand the leadership base of the state’s transgender inclusive community, we launched the first of its kind Texas-based Institute to advance full equality through public education and community organizing, and collaboration. The convening focused on challenging implicit biases and public opinion, and worked with session participants to identify opportunities and next steps to advance equality for all Texans. The Transgender Leadership Institute was made possible with the generous support of the Gill Foundation and the Hollyfield Foundation. For more information about the Transgender Leadership Institute, contact Lou Weaver, Transgender Programs Coordinator, lou.weaver@equalitytexas.org.
