Calling Texans of Faith Who Believe in Fair and Equal Treatment
Posted on February 3, 2015 at 9:40 pm

Treating others as we want to be treated is a belief shared by people from a variety of faith backgrounds. Because we know faith values motivate many Texans to treat others fairly and equally—including those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender—Equality Texas is a cornerstone partner of two new statewide initiatives: Texas Believes and Texas Catholics for Inclusion. Both of these  programs are designed to empower people of faith to become advocates of nondiscrimination protections and ensure their voices—and stories—are heard across the state: in media, in the legislature, and in the places they live and work.

Texas Believes represents a broad coalition of people of faith and faith leaders from across the state whose beliefs inform them that it is right and necessary to support the full equality of all Texans—including those who are gay or transgender.

Texas Catholics for Inclusion is a grassroots group of faithful Catholics dedicated to protecting all Texans from discrimination, including gay and transgender Texans, based on their belief in the Catholic principles of inclusion and hospitality.

Both initiatives encourage faith leaders and people of a variety of faith backgrounds to get involved by signing a pledge and sharing how their faith informs them to support nondiscrimination protections for gay and transgender Texans. And each of these groups is participating in Faith Advocacy Day in Austin on February 17.

If your faith informs you to follow the Golden Rule with respect to nondiscrimination protections for gay and transgender Texans, we encourage you to add your name to these pledges (Texas Believes here and Texas Catholics for Inclusion here). And we also encourage you to join people of faith from across the state at Faith Advocacy Day in Austin—just two weeks from today—for an opportunity to meet face-to-face with our elected officials and let them know why you believe LGBT Texans need protection from discrimination in the workplace, in housing, and in public accommodation.

As you continue to stand for equality and fairness, we encourage you to “let your light shine” throughout Texas and on behalf of all Texans!
